Even hardline Republicans see the folly of this primary adventure. Casey, who I personally do not care for any more than these yokels, is going to win unless he goes off on a trip with three female middle school students. The approach as defined in this article also is being used by the Romney campaign but entitled, "Anyone but Obama." He also must veer his 100 foot yacht back towards the middle, but he is going to find that steering this way on Lake Erie, the Allegheny River, the Susquehanna River and the Schuylkill River is no easy task. His Mississippi-style primary record will self destruct as it hits the shallows of the PA voter. Everything a candidate says these days counts as part of the record.

Voter suppression. A return to the early 1900s. Voters should have EASIER access to vote. Same day registration, early voting periods, and quicker voting on election day would make more sense than this ridiculous bill. PA, I am ashamed!!

This is part of a larger pattern, including not only voting restrictions but irregular (that is, not at the normal time0 redistricting. We have entered an era in which winning is more important than democracy. If this keeps up, republican government (small r) is in serious trouble.

Tony-- I agree. I'm amazed by the number of intelligent people who have been hoodwinked into supporting this kind of legislation. All of the states that have considered these bills have had something interesting in common: immediate enactment dates that would impact the November 2012 election. It's not a coincidence. Republicans should be trying to beat Obama the old fashioned way rather than through gimmicks like this.

This legislation is part of a concerted nationwide drive by an organized Movement Conservative conspiracy to minimize opposition voters, now and forever. It is not a healthy development for our democracy.

While I am in 100% agreement that Newt is part of the Bizarro world, I also think you give him too much credit. I doubt that any of his tactics spawn from the desire to be seen as an outside the beltway crusader, but from his pathalogical need for power.

Furthermore, I think that Romney was as caught off guard as the rest of us outside Bizzaro world and that's why his approach hasn't yet matched that of Newt's. If the Florida debates are any indication, the gloves will be off and Newt might finally be exposed as the villan he is.

Forgive me and pardon me for saying so but our national party is an A.S.S. (Always Sucking the Sinew). It is very simple. Whenever the Democrats put forth an well-spoken, eloquent candidate, the GOP loses. This has been the case since the election of JFK -though unions help tip the count at his election. Jimmy Carter did well in southern states (1976). What then was the contest when G.H.W. Bush ran, eh (1988)? Clinton, with this war machine and Wifey, yes, won the south partly as well (1992). G.W.H. a-whatchamacallit Walker Bush won the election (2000) through media confusion then court issued technicalities. Well-played but still. J.F. Kerry was a broken record repeating himself (2004) so he lost. Hence reviewing 2008, We see that Obama did well using his deportment and math. Simple as that. He was questionable to many but not questionable enough because he was a well-spoken, eloquent candidate. So…come 2012. GOP had Herman Cain who certainly put Obama to shame with regards to being a well-spoken, eloquent candidate -though lacking substance which easily could have been rectified by GOP operatives. The Democrats did well to eliminate him, a shame indeed. Thus we now have Huntsman who can match Obama with speech and charisma. But…no…the national GOP currently prefers candidates who suck the sinew of religiosity, people-pleasing pseudo conservative base and Obama-negro-hating causes. The sinew. What the GOP should focus is the blood, muscle and flesh of the fiscally conservatives, socially moderate and locality-centric minded neighboring or wanna-be Mom&Pop shop owners. And it seems every Democrat president-won preached to them while the Republican presidential hopeful-defeated catered the resentful children of the Whiskey Rebellion.

Hence, I agree with you Nathan though my perspective a little on the porcupine fish-side. Our national GOP has lost its momentum at the moment. At the moment, I say. I hope, in the near future, our state GOP and local GOP learns not to A.S.S. but remain a Pennsylvanian Republican or Philadelphia Republican.

Well said Nathan. I totally agree that the media and the old dinosaurs of the GOP have it all wrong. A Huntsman-Paul ticket just could have a shot at the Pres/VP!
